Is it time to rev up your marketing machine again?
 

Is the economy really improving?

We get these questions on a regular basis now. Not to sound lawyerly, but the answer is "it depends".

As with any economic recovery, different sectors will recover faster than others. Consumers will be cautious as they dabble with increased spending. Low end consumer goods will see an uptick in sales before 50" LCD TV's. Low cost restaurant chains will see improvement before the upper end chains.

So what should you be doing? Two things: Observe and Plan.

Observe: First, observe your traditional customer base. Do you see any changes, even slight, in their spending habits. Now observe businesses around you and those that you network with. Any changes?

Plan: If times are slow, this is THE BEST opportunity to revisit all aspects of your business plan. Think about how you will prepare yourself for the resurgence of the economy. Will you take the opportunity to expand the breadth or depth of your customer base? Will you change the way you attract or retain customers using new forms of communication (think WEB!)? Will you change you product line-up to be more friendly to a recovering consumer?
